Nina Meads

Woman arrested in fraud scheme:

Here’s something you don’t see every day. Someone in the US was arrested for being part of the overpayment scam on craigslist.

Police in Charleston, SC arrested 55-year-old Nina Marie Meads. It seems that Meads was allegedly the go between for Nigerians committing the overpayment scam.

For those of you who don’t know how it works is that someone will post something for sale on craigslist then the seller will receive a check for more than the amount they asked for. The ‘buyer’ will say they sent that in error then ask the seller to wire them back the overpayment. After the seller wires back the difference they find out that the check was a fake and the seller is now on the hook for the money.

Police say that Meads was the go between who would get the money from the wiring service before sending it to her overlords in Nigeria.

How does one even get a job being a runner for Nigerian scammers? Do they advertise on craigslist?

AGs Call for End of Craigslist Adult Services:

Kansas AG Asks Craigslist To Remove Adult Ads:

In case you couldn’t tell this is big news.

18 U.S. State Attorneys General have called for craigslist to shut down the adult services section. Among those are Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Martha Coakley of Massachusetts, Chris Koster of Missouri, Richard Cordray of Ohio, Bob Cooper of Tennessee, Dustin McDaniel of Arkansas, Douglas F. Gansler of Maryland, and Steve Six of Kansas. Not mentioned are the AGs from Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.

Of course craigslist was quick to pay lip service to the AGs…

Craigslist supports states’ efforts to stop illegal exploitation, spokeswoman Susan MacTavish Best said in a statement that did not indicate whether the website plans to get rid of its adult services section.

Of course they have no intention of getting rid of adult services. Craigslist has a history of flying in the face of common decency.

While this is a big piece of news there’s something missing. It’s easy for these attorneys general to call for craigslist to shut down adult services. There’s only one attorney general who if he put his name behind this movement would have a huge impact. I am of course referring to former governor, former mayor of Oakland, current gubernatorial candidate and current attorney general of California…

Jerry Brown

Attorney General Brown, we may be politically opposed in some of our views but for a man who cares about the environment and opposes the death penalty I would imagine that you would be opposed to the trafficking of women and children that is being facilitated by craigslist.

Craigslist is headquartered in your home state. In my opinion craigslist’s shameful record when it comes to prostitution, child prostitution and human trafficking is a black eye for the Golden State. If I can’t appeal to your heart I will appeal to your aspirations. How much of a huge political coup would it be in your current gubernatorial race if you got the biggest facilitator of human trafficking in the country to get that section of the website shut down?

Mr. Brown, I beg of you to add your name to that of the other state attorney’s general in asking craigslist to shut down the adult services section. Maybe they will listen to you.

Don’t forget, while craigslist is dragging its feet Geebo.com has been human trafficking free since its inception.

Judge nixes suit:

Last year South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster threatened craigslist with prosecution if they did not remove the adult services sections in South Carolina by May 15th. This was done in the wake of the murder of Julissa Brisman. I still think it’s political grandstanding but sometimes the ends justify the means.

Craigslist fired back with a lawsuit against Mr. McMaster saying that his threat of prosecution was a violation of free speech. A federal judge issued a restraing order against Mr. McMasters’s office on behalf of craigslist while the merits of craigslst’s lawsuit against McMaster were considered.

Guess what. They’ve been considered and the same judge who granted the restraining order has thrown out craigslist’s lawsuit saying…

…no one at Craigslist has been charged with a crime and that it was premature to decide whether its activities were exempt from prosecution.

Personally I think McMaster is another clueless politician but if he can make charges stick against craigslist I will tout him as the greatest AG in the country.

Deputies: Craigslist Seller Scammed By Buyer:

A woman from Boiling Springs, South Carolina is out of $1700 after cashing a fake check. She was selling a microwave on craigslist for $670 and received a check from a scammer calling himself Dr. Dreman. The victim cashed the check and wired the difference before finding out the check was a fake.

You know, craigslist does have the capability to block Nigerian IP addresses. I wonder if they’re getting Nigerian kickbacks.

I’m only half kidding about that.

Police: Man Used Craigslist To Solicit Sex At Library:

If you’re planning on using the mens room at the Easley, South Carolina public library you may want to take some hand sanitizer with you as it seems to be a popular attraction for the craigslist cruisers.

Police there arrested one 46-year-old James Michael Stewart after he allegedly posted an ad seeking anonymous sex in the library’s rest room.

There were at least 4 other ads seeking the same in the same location. Luckily the article also provides a picture of one of the ads showing that it was in fact posted in the casual encounters section.

Whod’a thunk it?

Look if you want to have anonymous gay or straight sex that’s your prerogative but keep it away from places that other people have to use. Ick.
