Richard Beasley

Adult in Ohio Craigslist case charged with murder:

This past Friday 52-year-old Richard Beasley was indicted for the craigslist murders of Ralph Geiger, David Pauley, and Timothy Kern. Beasley is accused of posting a phony craigslist ad for employment at a nonexistent ranch then killing the perspective applicants when they showed up.

The indictment states that Beasley was allegedly the triggerman in all 3 murders and the attempted murder of Scott Davis who was able to escape his assailant.

Beasley was being held on drug and prostitution charges while investigators worked on the murder charges.

His alleged accomplice, 16-year-old Brogan Rafferty, has been charged as an adult.

Prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty for Beasley.

Brogan Rafferty

Craigslist suspect to be tried in adult court; teen cooperative with authorities:

16-year-old Brogan Rafferty has been charged as an adult in the Ohio craigslist slayings. Rafferty is accused, along with 52-year-old, Richard Beasley of luring 3 men to their deaths with a phony ranch hand job offer on craigslist. If his case was to go to trial he could be looking at life without parole.

Now normally I’d be all for charging a 16-year-old accused of murder as an adult but there has been so little about Rafferty’s involvement released that I’m not quite sure right now. So far the only thing I really heard about him was that he may have dug the shallow graves that the victims were found in. His father claims that Beasley led him to believe they were drainage ditches.

Anyway according to most reports it sounds like that Rafferty is going to enter into a plea deal in exchange for testifying against Beasley. I wouldn’t be surprised if that plea came with limited jail time if any.

Man Shot After Craigslist Sting Goes Awry:

It’s no secret that a lot of stolen goods are put up for sale on craigslist. Every once in a while you’ll see a story where a civilian got their items back by performing an amateur sting on the suspect. I don’t post these stories for the potential danger that doing that poses. This is a story that proves that point.

In Modesto. California a group of people decided to set up someone who was allegedly selling their friend’s stolen car stereo on craigslist. When the group of 4 confronted the suspect the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire. He struck a 33-year-old man 5 times in the torso.

Leave police work to the professionals. If not it could get you killed.

Richard Beasley

I know I’ve been behind so today I’ll be posting the updates on this story in daily posts as I get them. This post may be updated throughout the day.

Texas OK’d Craigslist suspect release:

Authorities in Texas allowed Richard Beasley to remain free after he violated his parole in Ohio on drug charges. Texas was only interested in bringing Beasley back there if he was convicted on the Ohio drug charges. While this is unfortunate Texas could not have known that Beasley was going to go on to allegedly kill three people.

Craigslist shootings suspect back in Akron court, pleads not guilty in prostitution case:

Beasley pleaded not guilty to the prostitution charges against him. If you’ll recall he is accused of profiting from prostitution. Allegedly 14 people were under his employ including a 17-year-old girl.

3rd Body Possibly Tied to Craigslist Ad Identified:

The 3rd fatality possibly connected to the craigslist killings has been officially identified as 56-year-old Ralph Geiger of Akron.

***

Craigslist serial murder suspect faces death-penalty trial in Summit County:

As you can surmise by the headline prosecutors in Summit County, Ohio have announced that they will seek the death penalty against Beasley.

***

Possible 3rd Ohio Craigslist Victim Died in August:

Investigators say that Ralph Geiger was murdered back in August which could make him the first victim of the craigslist murder scam.

Richard Beasley

Akron man suspected in Craigslist killings defends reputation in letter to Beacon Journal:

52-year-old Richard Beasley of Akron, Ohio is the primary suspect in the murder of 3 men in Ohio that responded to a phony craigslist ad offering employment at a fictitious ranch. Beasley has not yet been charged with any of the murders but had been charged previously with drug trafficking and profiting from prostitution. Beasley recently sent a letter to the Akron Beacon Journal defending his ‘good name’.

“ … to call me a con man when I sacrificed for others is wrong,” Beasley wrote. “To turn their back on me is not following Christ’s example. I gave three full years of my life to that ministry and what I got out of it was the satisfaction of doing the right thing.

“There was no ‘con’ to it.”

“Who paid for this? I did,” he wrote. “I had a financial settlement [from a traffic crash that injured his back] and spent most all of it to help others and got almost no financial help from anyone.”

Beasley also wrote that he spent three years on the church staff helping people, mostly drug addicts, alcoholics, the mentally challenged and the homeless who were charged with a crime and facing the possibility of prison.

He said he appeared in court on behalf of defendants three to four times a month for three years. After just one year of work, he was ordained by the church pastor, the Rev. Randy Baker, as a chaplain.

“I was very well-known for these things, but never looked for credit on this Earth,” Beasley wrote. “A number of people from doctors and judges and lawyers and preachers and the homeless can stand witness to these facts.”

While helping drug addicts, he made drug dealers unhappy, he said. While helping domestic violence victims, he angered spouses. At times, he had to “sanction” people who violated rules at his transitional home, he said.

“The point is, I have enemies, but for the right reasons,” he wrote. “So when you quote someone as a family friend who says something horrible about me, you better believe that’s not a family friend.”

“I lived in an old, inner-city house, drove old cars, got up in the middle of the night uncountable times to answer calls for help,” he wrote. “I gave away almost all I had and got almost nothing in return. That is not the actions of a con man.”

Except one could argue that con men and grifters have a long history of using churches and religion to perpetrate their cons. I only have to go as far as mentioning the so-called Christian Missionaries working in Africa who have fleeced so many people out of money through craigslist.

Right now the details surrounding Beasley make me think that he fits the description of con man to a T.

Ohio investigators probe shootings possibly tied to Craigslist ad:

Investigators in Ohio have found two more bodies that may be connected to the most recent craigslist killing.

As by now I’m sure you know 16-year-old Brogan Rafferty of Stow, Ohio and 52-year-old Richard Beasley of Akron are believed to be involved with the death of 51-year-old David Pauley. They allegedly lured him from Florida to Ohio with the promise of steady employment at a fictitious ranch. Pauley was shot and killed then buried in a shallow grave. Some believe this was done so Beasley could steal his identity in order to stay out of jail. You see how well that worked out.

Anyway this past weekend two more bodies had been found that may be connected to Beasley. The body of 47-year-old Timothy Kern of Massillon, Ohio was found in a shallow grave. His family members say that he had responded to a craigslist ad that was eerily similar to the one Beasley is accused of posting. Even on his Facebook Kern himself said that he felt the job offer was strange but good.

A 3rd body that so far has only been described as a white male has also been discovered. There has been a gag order placed on the case so no more details about the possible third victim have been released yet.

I’m not going to fault the victims in this story especially due to the hard economic times we’re going through now. However if any ad on craigslist, or any classifieds site, seems to good to be true it probably is. If at anytime you have any hesitation about responding to any kind of ad listen to that hesitation.

Or just don’t use craigslist at all. I think I’ve offered plenty of evidence about the kind of criminal element that lurks there unfettered.

Thanks to all who sent in tips.

UPDATE 11/29/2011: 2 churches deny that Beasley was a chaplain of theirs in any way shape or form. I would think so since most chaplains don’t deal in drugs and prostitution…allegedly.

UPDATE 12/1/2011: Rafferty has been charged with aggravated murder. Also the possible third fatality is believed to be a man named Ralph Geiger and he was shot in the head.

UPDATE II 12/1/2011: Beasley is said to have managed at least 14 prostitutes in 2009 including a 17-year-old girl. I wonder if he used a certain classifieds site for that or was it the other one?

Akron man, Stow teen in custody; FBI alleges Craigslist ads lured victims:

Family puts face on victim of craigslist plot:

We can add two more names to the ever-expanding list of craigslist killers. This time it’s 16-year-old Brogan Rafferty of Stow, Ohio and 52-year-old Richard Beasley of Akron. They’re accused of luring 51-year-old David Pauley to Ohio from Florida with the promise of employment at a ranch before robbing him and shooting him to death.

A South Carolina man was lured by the same promise but when the pair pulled a gun on him he fled after being shot in the arm. A woman from Massachusetts called police and said that the ad sounded a lot like the one her brother responded to and he had not been heard from in some time. Using cadaver dogs police were able to find Mr. Pauley buried in a shallow grave in Noble County, Ohio.

The motive behind both shootings was to get the victims to Ohio with all their possessions so they could be robbed.

I know we’re in tough economic times. Nobody knows that better than me since I’ve been unemployed for almost a year. However craigslist is filled with too many criminals to be trusted for legitimate employment opportunities. In hard economic times is when these criminals really relish in their illegal endeavors. At the least you can have your identity or money stolen. At worst you can lose your life like Mr. Pauley. It’s just not worth it.

I’ll post more details as they become available to me and as time allows.

UPDATE 11/25/2011: Sources told an Ohio TV station that Beasley wanted to steal the identities of his victims in order to stay out of jail on drug trafficking and prostitution charges.

UPDATE II 11/25/2011: Rafferty’s parents claim that Beasley threatened Rafferty’s family with violence if he did not comply with his scheme.

UPDATE III 11/25/2011: Rafferty’s mother says that Beasley was a family friend for 20 years who was a mentor for Rafferty. I’m sorry but as soon as a guy is charged with drug trafficking he’s no longer be my 16-year-old son’s mentor.

Source: Harlem Globetrotters trainer met killer through Craigslist:

This seems to have been the week for craigslist murders. One I’m sure you heard of and then this one which you may not have.

In Frederick, Colorado 42-year-old Thomas Bashline was found by his girlfriend in his bedroom shot to death on November 4th. Bashline was a trainer for the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters. Some investigators believe that Bashline was killed by a man he met on craigslist in the m4m section of the personals. Police have a suspect in custody but have not released his name.

Guys, I don’t care if you’re openly gay or on the down low but for the love of Elton John please stop using craigslist for anonymous hook ups. I’ve posted stories about men being robbed, blackmailed and now murdered. Is it really worth it?

More details on this as they become available and as time permits.

Darin Leutbecker

Boat seller claims he was almost killed:

Brevard man arrested in New Smyrna Beach armed boat-jacking:

I briefly posted about last month’s craigslist boat-jacking here. It turns out that the alleged boat thief got more than just a stolen boat.

Police in Florida say that 38-year-old Darin Leutbecker responded to a craigslist ad for a boat for sale. When the boat’s owner and Leutbecker were out on the water Leutbecker allegedly pulled a gun on the owner. That’s when things turned into a 70s TV show kind of fight. During the scuffle both men ended up in the water. At one point shots were fired at the boat owner but he may have gotten the last laugh when he slashed the throat of his attacker.

Luckily the boat owner was relatively unharmed while Leutbecker was picked up at the hospital while seeking treatment for his injury.

It just goes to show you what kind of dangers are lurking in every section of craigslist.

Jerry Ramon Jackson

Arrest made in Craigslist ad shooting:

Pima County, Arizona Sheriffs have arrested 23-year-old Jerry Ramon Jackson for the shooting a 74-year-old man in Tucson.

Luckily the man has survived his injuries. A few weeks ago the man thought he would be buying an iPad through an ad he saw on craigslist. Instead he was allegedly shot by Jackson.

Look people, you’re not going to find a deal for an iPad on craigslist. Most of the ads are either some kind of scam or are set ups like this one.

I’d rather pay retail than losing money, blood or my life.
