Mass. craigslist rapist convicted

Craigslist Rapist Found Guilty:

When it comes to violent criminals there is one list that’s longer than that of the ‘craigslist killers’. That would be craigslist rapists.

In 2009 Reinaldo Prado of Framingham, Mass. was arrested for raping and robbing prostitutes that advertised their services on craigslist. His crimes took place three months before anyone even knew who Philip Markoff was.

When arrested he was in possession of stolen cell phones, knives and zip ties. He raped and robbed these women in a matter of days.

Today he was convicted of rape and robbery and will be sentenced in October.

With the removal of the adult/erotic services section from craigslist the rapes that have occurred through their site have not ceased. Now they just occur through the casual encounters and personals sections.

As I’ve said many times before craigslist is far from having cleaned up its act.

UPDATE 10/13/11: Prado only got 9-12 years. Another joke sentence for a serial sexual predator.

FAILED ROBBERY RESULTS IN DEADLY SHOOTING INVOLVING OFF DUTY CORRECTIONS OFFICER:

Prosecutor says eyewitness, cell phone may provide answers in fatal Pleasantville shooting by corrections officer:

This past Thursday 20-year-old Richard Roe was shot and killed in Pleasantville, New Jersey during an alleged Craigslist robbery that went bad. The thing is that the crime is being investigated as Roe being the robber.

25 year-old Sean Czerwinski was accompanying a family member who was selling a pair of headphones for $500. Supposedly two men attempted robbing the pair at gunpoint. However Czerwinski is an Atlantic County Corrections Officer and was armed at the time. Reports say that Czerwinski produced his sidearm and fired at Roe who eventually died from his wounds.

The phone number that called Czerwinski’s family member was said to have been used in other robberies in the area.

I grew up in the area so I can tell you that the name Pleasantville is an oxymoron so this does not surprise me.

Hopefully this will send a message to other would be craigslist robbers in the area that you never know who you’re messing with when you try to rob someone.

The hot girl on craigslist really doesn’t want you

Police: Craigslist ‘Companionship’ Ad Leads To Attack, Robbery:

I used to have a site called MyCrimeSpace. It dealt with crimes as it relates to social media and gave birth to this very site. There used to be a running gag on the site we called “The hot girl on MySpace doesn’t really want you” due to the number of guys who were being robbed while thinking they were going on a MySpace booty call. Not surprisingly it also happens on craigslist. I’ve mostly focused on this when gay males go cruising and end up getting robbed but straight men are still at it too.

For example this dumbass from Palm Beach County, Florida who went on a craigslist hook up to meet a woman calling herself ‘Holly’. Holly allegedly placed an ad on craigslist looking for ‘companionship’. The kind of companionship guys think about at 4am because that’s when the victim went to meet her.

Instead he got a beatdown by two men while ‘Holly’ stood there and watched.

After the beating, the men took the victim’s wallet and keys, then tied his hands and feet and threw him in the trunk of his car. They then drove the car for a few minutes, let the man out of the trunk, then drove off in his car.

Not quite what he was looking for I’m sure. However this all could have been prevented if the guy wasn’t thinking with his dick.

Holly has been identified as Stephanie Scott and has been charged.

Bottom line: Don’t be a dumbass. The women on craigslist who say they want companionship are either hookers or they want to rob you.

3 robbed, two shot in one night in Milwaukee

Three robberies, two shootings tied to Craigslist ad:

Late last Thursday night in Milwaukee three people were robbed and two were shot after responding to similar ads on craigslist. The ads were for a used car three people responded to the various ads. All three were robbed while two were shot with one being in critical condition. No arrests have been made at this time.

Again, since craigslist is free and unmoderated the threshold of entry is very low for criminals. If you’re going shopping for a car I would recommend either Auto Trader where ads are paid for or Geebo.com where the ads are moderated.

With craigslist it doesn’t matter where you meet the person anymore.

South Florida backpage escorts beaten, robbed and raped

Tipped by online ads, robbers terrorize escorts in SoFla hotels:

In Broward County, Florida there have been a series of robberies and assaults of women who advertise as ‘escorts’ on the Village Voice Media owned backppage.com. It at least one incident a victim was raped by two men.

Some of the suspects have been arrested…

Arrested in May and charged in the Broward robbery spree were: Eutil Couch, 29, of Sunrise; Brandon Lamichael Medina, 23, of Hollywood; Keonta Murray, 26, of Port St. Lucie; and Henry Ronald Mitchell, 24, and Jonathan H. Williams, 23, both of Fort Lauderdale.

What I really want to talk about is Village Voice Media’s response, or lack thereof…

An executive at Village Voice Media, Backpage.com’s owner, referred questions to legal counsel Steve Suskin. He could not be reached for comment, despite emails and a phone message left at his office.

Legal counsel? That sounds like VVM is circling the wagons. At least when craigslist refused to comment to the media the refusal came from Jimmy or Craig themselves.

The Sun Sentinel article also turned up a little quote that I was unaware of about backpage from VVM themselves…

Village Voice wrote in a Sept. 19 blog entry that it cooperates with authorities and has safeguards to ensure only adults use the site.

It argued that people can legally post directly onto websites like Backpage.com “without pre-screening or censorship,” according to the blog entry. “The responsibility, under the law, rests with the person supplying the post.”

For one, obviously the ‘safeguards’ don’t work because I’ve documented on this site numerous times of children being peddled. secondly saying that the responsibility lies with the person making the post is just VVM’s way of saying that they don’t care what happens through their site just as long as they keep making money.

Latest craigslist killer may be serial craigslist criminal

Craigslist Shooting Suspect May Be Tied to Similar Crimes:

I originally posted about the murder of Garrett Berki here. The 18-year-old was shot and killed after being robbed in a phony craigslist transaction. Now it turns out that this may not be the gunman’s first rodeo when it comes to craigslist crime.

17-year-old Rashon Abernathy is the accused triggerman in Garrett Berki’s murder. Another victim has identified Abernathy in another craigslist robbery where Abernathy allegedly robbed someone at gunpoint after posting an ad for a Macbook Pro. The same kind of laptop that Garrett Berki thought he was buying.

Once again, when you have a free classifieds site with no moderation and a perceived sense of anonymity you are going to have this kind of crime. Also once again craigslist would rather see their userbase die than make any significant changes.

San Diego area teen killed after craigslist robbery

Dying for a bargain: California college student robbed and murdered by three teens who posed as computer sellers on Craigslist:

18-year-old Garrett Berki was shot and killed this past week after he and his girlfriend were robbed during a phony craigslist transaction.

Berki met with three 17-year-old in San Diego for the purpose of buying a $600 computer. Instead they robbed Garrett of his money and fled in their car. Garrett gave chase in order to get their license plate number but instead wound up face to face with them in a cul-de-sac. That’s when one of the teens produced a gun and shot and killed him.

The three teens that have been charged with Garrett’s death are Rashon Abernathy, Seandell Jones and Shaquille Jordan. They’ve all been charged as adults and have all pleaded not guilty. They’re also looking at 50 to life sentences each.

There are no safe areas anymore to do business on craigslist since it attracts so many criminals anymore. Public place, bring people with you, it doesn’t matter anymore.

Now all we have is to add 3 more names to the list of ‘Craigslist Killers’.

NYC prostitutes assaulted and robbed

2 suspects wanted for robbing 2 reported prostitutes:

2 prostitutes in New York City were assaulted and robbed by a pair of suspects. The suspects found on of their victims through backpage and the other through craigslist.

One of the victims was slashed in the hand while the other was choked until she became unconscious.

I do not think we have two more Philip Markoffs on our hands.

Suspect #1 is described as being a black or Hispanic man, 5’5″ tall, 155 lbs, with long hair pulled back into a pony tail. He was armed with a pocket knife.

Suspect #2 is described as being a black or Hispanic man, 5’8″ tall, and 160 lbs.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).

This shows a few things. The first is that I’m sure crimes like this against prostitutes are probably vastly unreported and that dregs like these two assailants probably use craigslist and backpage to find all their victims.

It shows that craigslist still has prostitution ads on their site, probably the casual encounters section, showing that section is still in need of moderation.

Lastly it shows that backpage still doesn’t give a rat’s ass about what happens to people on their adult section.

You know who does care about their users? Geebo.com. They’ve been moderating their ads since their inception.

Detroit police looking for craigslist shooter

Police Seek Detroit Craigslist Shooting Suspect:

Police in Detroit are looking for Julian Logan who is accused of shooting a man that he met through craigslist. Police say that Logan told the victim he was going to sell him $7,000 worth of electronics. Instead Logan is said to have shot the man in a robbery.

The shooting took place in February. The victim was in critical condition but has survived his wounds.

Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-5640 or Crime Stoppers at its anonymous tip line at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

Logan is lucky that he didn’t become one more in the long line of craigslist killers. Also even though this article is a week old from my checks Logan is still on the run, no pun intended.

Ky. craigslist kidnapper and robber kills self after police chase

Lexington Man Kills Self After Chase In N.Y.:

I had trouble finding details on this one but from what I can ascertain 28-year old Michael Crandell of Lexington, Kentucky posted an ad for a motorcycle on craigslist. When someone that he knew showed up at his home about the motorcycle that person was tied up and taken to another county to be robbed.

Crandell was on the run until a few days ago when police spotted him in Clinton County, New York trying to cross over into Canada. A police chase that included Crandell driving on the side walk ended when police surrounded him and Crandell committed suicide by shooting himself while his girlfriend was in the car with him.

The girlfriend, 22-year-old Erica Felix, was arrested for marijuana possession and hindering prosecution. No word on if she was adorned in the chunks of her boyfriend when she was arrested.
