I received the following short missive from someone calling themselves Khalid. Khalid writes…

Dear Sir, you obviously have no perspective in addition to issues with sex. Given the fact that all types of crimes happen from meetings on internet marketplaces, I wonder about the true reason for your agenda. Why not just do awqay with all types of advertisiments.

Which type of sex are we talking about Khalid? The rapes of women set up by proxy from jealous ex-boyfriends? How about the sex that women and young girls are forced to have by their pimps and traffickers? Or are you talking about the multitudes of children that have been molested through these ads?

I have no problem with sex. As a matter of fact I’m a big fan. But let’s not kid ourselves. The ‘sex’ I have a problem with is not the type shared by people in love or even a one night stand. The kind I have a problem with is the kind where one of the participants doesn’t have a say in the matter.

Personally I think that it is you who has no perspective.

I received the following e-mail recently from someone claiming to be a current victim of human trafficking…

I have & continue to be human trafficked on craigslist which all attorney generals are on plus attorney general & authorities have been notified but I believe they are the problem in causing and promoting my human traffick cuz nothing remains to be done. Craigslist cuz of it criminal activities and other similar web domains should not be able to proceed any further with these ads section on sex period. I know that I am used as asset in financial markets that is why my human traffick and underage trafficking is allowed cuz it is an industry supporting the backbone of america businesses. This is the truth.

In my opinion it’s because once the attorneys general got craigslist to shut down adult/erotic services they felt that was a big enough show to look good for voters but most of them have failed to not only follow up with craigslist but have largely ignored backpaqge as well.

Hopefully the author of this e-mail will be able to find some help and escape that life. There are resources for that available on the links page.

The fight isn’t over yet. Help spread the word on craigslist and backpage crime by winning a free CraigsCrimeList T-Shirt.

I received the following e-mail from a reader named Todd who asks why I support Geebo.com?

I have been reading some of your stories… and I noticed in every story you advertise a safer alternative to craigslist with geebo.com… but I am curious to know what the difference is (and why do you just bash craigslist can this not happen with any classifieds, eBay, geebo, etc..) to me they look like very similar services. Even the posting an ad page looks similar… I don’t expect a response, but if you could please let me know I am curious… Thanks

First I’d like to address this is not a ‘bash craigslist’ site per se. I am very critical of craigslist because I believe they are more concerned with their bottom line than the safety of not only their own customers but the people that have been and are still trafficked on their site.

Also it’s not just craigslist that I am critical. I am also very critical, maybe even more so, with the Village Voice Media owned backpage.com. In my opinion their business practices are even worse than craigslist’s.

And these stories can happen with any free classifieds site however it also depends on what that site does to help in protecting its users.

Which brings me to why is Geebo a safer alternative. Rather than speak for Geebo.com I asked Geebo CEO Greg Collier for his response because I have that kind of pull.

This is Greg Collier, Founder/President of Geebo, responding to your inquiry. I appreciate you taking the time to contact Trench Reynolds to learn about the safer, more secure online classified site that Geebo provides over Craigslist. I wish more individuals would take the time to learn the difference. In some instances, such an inquiry could be life-changing, even life-saving.

From our inception Geebo has employed a rigorous review process for all submissions received. After a user submits their post, a Geebo staff member reviews it to ensure that it satisfies our guidelines regarding content, language, and legality. Typically, posts do and they are then made available on Geebo. Posts that do not qualify, however, never make their way onto our site. This procedural safeguard allows Geebo to prevent illegal activities, such as human trafficking, prostitution, etc., from utilizing our site and preying on our users.

Craigslist does none of this. Instead of reviewing their classified submissions prior to online publication, Craigslist just lets them “go live.” In an attempt to conceal their reckless disregard for their customer’s safety, Craigslist imposes a self-regulation method in which users can “flag” posts they find offensive or inconsistent with Craigslist rules. Based upon the reported instances of rape, robbery, murder, prostitution, and human trafficking that have been linked to Craigslist, their method doesn’t work.

Geebo also eliminated our personals category. Though we never had a problem, which we credit to our review process, we never wanted to. We took this preemptive step a few months ago and, although Craigslist has followed suit in recent weeks, their lack of a review process vitiates any security that could be procured by such a move. Instead of illegal activity ceasing to take shape with the removal of Craigslist’s adult services section, such ads are now posted elsewhere thanks to the absence of a review procedure.

In short, Geebo takes the safety, security, and life of our users seriously.

I hope this answers your questions.

And that’s why I support Geebo. I can’t think of any other classifieds site that has been around as long as Geebo has that really looks out for its users.

I received the following e-mail from a gentleman named Ken…

I learned of your site today via an article from MSNBC.com. Upon reading your about section, you state:

“This is not a personal attack on online classifieds sites per se however some of them such as craigslist and the Village Voice Media owned backpage.com have engaged in certain business practices I feel are detrimental not only to their user base but to the public at large.”

Could you please explain, reference, and use specifics as to what you feel those practices are?

I thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

First off Ken I want to thank you for your well written e-mail. I don’t get a lot of those these days. But you’ll have to forgive me for my bluntness when I say that just about every post on this site in one way or another features the bad business practices of craigslist and backpage.

The most glaring one that I can think of is that both backpage and craigslist allowed women and children to be trafficked on their sites under the guises of ‘escorts’ and adult services. A lot of the time collecting money for these ads while always denying that they ever had a hand in the facilitation of the trafficking.

The other one that immediately leaps to mind is that fact that craigslist is still for the most part unmoderated and that their community policing has worked the opposite way it has been intended. For example through craigslist’s unmoderated casual encounters section two women have been the victims of what I’ve been calling rape by proxy. Not to mention that people who try to advertise legitimate businesses on craigslist have had their ads flagged by people whose businesses aren’t so legitimate.

Also I’d like to mention that craigslist has been rated poorly by the Better Business Bureau time and time again.

If I had the time Ken I’m sure I could come up with many more instances but in the mean time you’re more than welcome to peruse the site for yourself to see many instances of their bad business practices.

Unprofessional contractor behavior:

No this isn’t a casual encounters story. It’s a story of a contractor who has been accused of scamming.

I received an e-mail from a reader from Southern California who claims he has been ripped off by one Ross Emmick of the Mesa, Arizona area. The article I linked to tells you the story of how one woman from Phoenix was allegedly ripped off. That was back in March and according to the e-mail Emmick moved on to California.

I am one of many scammed on Craigslist. Having been burned and now I’m taking a/ closer look, doing what everyone should do – due diligence -I now realize I am by far not alone. Small consolation, I’d rather have my money back frankly. So here is our story; We met someone selling discounted Murphy beds on Craigslist. He drives from His home in Mesa, Arizona and sells Murphy/wall beds all over Southern California. We only only found out later that he does this because some of the locals are already on to him so it’s time to move onto greener pastures.

Here is a link to a news story about this guy, Ross Paul Emmick, who rips people off on Murphy beds via Craigslist. You gotta love how the piece starts: “I met hm on Craigslist”:

Our experience was very similar to hers. All around an incredibly bad experience for us. We’re out $1900 and we’ve had to deal with in addition to being the worst manufacturer of Murphy beds in the world this intimidating, rage-alholic, incredibly dangerous and dysfunctional personality. So consider yourselves warned. I do this merely to warn others, I wish I had known in advance and I’m ashamed to admit it but a simple 10-second Google search would have sufficed to have protected us from this guy.

A Google search is great but if you want to go more in depth you may want to check with the Better Business Bureau as well. There are also paid sites where you can see if other people have had similar good or bad experiences with contractors.

Stay tuned Monday for the next chance to win your own craigscrimelist t-shirt.

When I received the following e-mail it was from someone calling themselves “Pissed Off”. I thought oh great I got another e-mail from the cult of Craig. However I was more than pleasantly surprised by the e-mail.

Pissed Off wrote:

Hey, seeing as you are somewhat knowledgeable in human trafficking, do you know of any law enforcement task forces specifically assigned to this problem? I’m a criminal justice major and a veteran and I used to want to become a narcotics
officer, but I have lately become much more interested in doing my part to put a stop to this bullshit of selling women and children in to sex slavery.

I haven’t really done much research in to it myself, but I plan on it. I ended up on your site through a post by a counselor friend of mine who pegged Sparre as a potential killer long before it happened. It’s interesting that I have wanted to switch to human trafficking enforcement and I ended up on your site with no intent of seeing anything about that.

Anyway I appreciate what you are doing here and keep it up! Hook me up with any information you got and I’ll be greatly
appreciative.

The sad part is that I could not refer him to any one government law enforcement agency that deals specifically with human trafficking. What’s even worse is that when I was up in Richmond the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia told the crowd that there are almost no human trafficking laws on the books in any state.

If I am incorrect about any trafficking agency please let me know.

I had an e-mail conversation today with a reader who had a very harrowing experience while trying to rent an apartment from a landlord that advertised on craigslist.

Her first e-mail to me said that the landlord had been arrested and was advertising again on craigslist and was there somewhere that this could be reported? My Reply was that you can try to flag the ad but that won’t guarantee that anything will be done about it. Or you could post an ad of your own telling of your experience with this landlord but that could get your ad flagged and removed. So basically I told her that her only real recourse was to notify law enforcement as craigslist will more than likely do nothing about it.

Out of curiosity I asked why the landlord was arrested and she told me that in a nutshell the landlord provided no written agreement and constantly went back on their verbal agreement. When the tenant demanded her money back a scuffle ensued and the landlord ended up assaulting the tenant.

She now regrets using craigslist to rent and even went as far as to tell me that if you are going to rent anyplace to do a background check on your prospective landlord.

We don’t have to put up with this. Boycott Craigslist. Try Geebo.com for a socially responsible alternative to community classifieds.

I received the following e-mail from ana…

i understood your need to put down craigslist but to use it to promote another social networking site that is supposedly “safer” makes it seem more like you have a hidden agenda in my opinion.

geebo has 100k visitors a month and craigslist has 59 million.

i guess its a little bit easier for geebo to scan each ad.

i went to geebo and i saw the big donation button and thought to myself, “wow now that’s something craigslist doesnt have.”

please

if they wanted to build a safer site, they could do it without holding out their hands.

craigslist did.

thats what made craigslist great. it was never about making money.

when you promote a site that isn’t trying to cash in, then i’ll be impressed.

Ugh, why don’t literate people ever e-mail me?

Anyway, first off I have no hidden agenda. I sometimes promote Geebo, at no cost I may add, because I believe in the product and I believe in what they’re doing. Geebo isn’t the only product I support. On this site alone I have also promoted other safer sites like Safelist and the now on hiatus Flugpo. On my site about school violence I promote the book Columbine by Dave Cullen because it’s a great book and I respect Dave Cullen much like I respect Greg Collier from Geebo and the only thing I got out of that was a review copy of Dave’s book. I may also add that I was posting about the dangers and flaws of craigslist long before I knew Greg.

Did you ever think that the reason Geebo has much less ads than craigslist is because they don’t accept ads for prostitution and other illegal activity unlike craigslist.

I’ve never seen a donate button on Geebo but if they did I am sure it would be going to one of the many charities they have partnered with. I’m also sure that Geebo has never had the money that they’ve donated rejected like craigslist.

When craigslist started it may have not been about the money but it is now, so says their proposed $30 Million they get from the sex ads alone. Talk about cashing in.

And ana you mistakenly led me to your web development website. You must be a craigslist developer because your website design reminds me a lot like craigslist’s….like it’s from 1997 on Geocities designed by an AOL user.
