I received the following e-mail from reader Krysta who encountered the old tutor scam…

This guy’s emails were extremely fishy with some odd details. I looked up reports on tutor scams on craigslist and found them very similar to the ones already reported. Then I asked myself what is a UN peacekeeper doing in Eastern Oregon? Here is the scam:

“I am pleased with whatever arrangement you could have made now concerning the hours to be having him the tutorial.Is name is Mike and he speaks danish and alil bit english language but not fluently.Okay according to the distances i think i will inform the nanny about it and she can be bringing him to you for the lesson wherever you have been choosing to be comfortable for you ,and this will bring him closer to your family and emulate a good morales from them.I would like to you get prepared starting with him by the middle of the month and i think that will be sometimes next two week.But as a teen tutor you should realize a better time table and housr to be taking kids and will be welcome with me.Nevermind,i will be making a payment of a month for this calaculated three hours every week,i guess it would be a cost fee of $720 by my own calaculation here and would like to make this payment out to you in a check,such that i will not finish with the money cos we have just been paid our royalties.i worked under the united nation as a peace keeping force. while i have lil time to visit home this time around while mike has been staying with his grandma before i finally take him to a nanny.Furthermore,i may required you not to recommend Fridays though, because all children have the concept of “Its friday, no more school!” and tend to have a hard time concentrating on fridays. And i would want you to give me a weekly reports and send me copies of your lesson plans for each lesson before or after the time of the lesson through the nanny.Nevertheless, I have also attached a picture of my son Mike with the nanny so that you will know how she and mike looks when you set to meet.I wish i have make myself cleared to you now and hoping you will take up this offer , Because i have made contacts with my son concerning the arrangement of the tutoring which he told me is ok by him because i always want the best for my son in life.i will be looking forward to hearing from you again.i would await the your information, so i can proceed on the payment asap.

I guess Eastern Oregon has a problem with Somali pirates or something. ‘Is name is Mike’? Wow. This guy wasn’t even trying.

I guess he was waiting for the response before setting up his proposed victim for the fake check scam. Luckily Krysta was smart enough to do her research.

Reader Brian sent in this picture of a $3850 fake scammer check made out to everyone’s favorite character from The Rocky Horror Picture Show for a $500 cat-pee stained couch.

Brian, you actually do win at the internets.

I received an e-mail from reader Deborah from Sacramento who said she was looking for a house to rent and received one of the infamous scam e-mails.

The fake scammer name used on the e-mail? Reverend Dago Villa.

It’s a good thing that this ad didn’t run in New Jersey or else my friends Antony and Mario might have taken offense to it.

Anyway Rev. Villa wanted the money wired overseas then would send Deborah the keys. Thankfully she did not fall for it.

It’s only when enough people are educated will these scammers be put out of business.

This e-mail comes to us from across the pond. UK reader Roger posted an ad on Gumtree renting a room. he got a response from a fake scammer name we’ve seen before.

I’ve just advertised a room for rent on gumtree, and I got an e-mail from a Steven Randy. Here is that e-mail in full…….

“Hello,
My name is Mr.Steven Randy, I am highly interested in making payment for the room you advertised for rent, I want to make the payment on behalf of my Daughter who intends to be at your location to further her education, I am currently in Paris France my family. So I would like to
know how much you will be charging per month with deposit.I would like to know the nearest bus/stops to the universities around the house and few information about the house, Please do get back with your FINAL ASKING PRICE per month and deposite so i can make arrangements for payment asap and also give you more details about my daughter and my family.

I was a bit suspicious from the off. The advert clearly states all of the facilities available within the house, and that it has very easy access to all bus stops, etc. Also, at the date of reciept the education calender had already been long underway, of course it is normal for students to change college/uni mid term, it just rang false. Luckily I had the good foresight
to create a generic e-mail address for advertising the room, and not have my name plastered on it. Just very generic and fairly untraceable……

……So I replied with:

“Hi Steven,

The average monthly rental, including bills for the room works out around £330 per month. Deposit is £350 (I’m not sure what that is in Euro’s!). Also, because the house is now being rented through an agency, there is a £150 reference fee, which is paid directly to ******** properties, who will then have to reference yourself, and/or your daughter.

The location of the house is close to the city centre, and is within a 2 minute walk to the bus stop (It literally is just less than 50 metres from the house), which services City Centre (which is a 10 minute walk from the front door anyway) - there is also a bus which runs direct to the
universities from the stop as well.

I will be honest though Steven, we would like to meet the person we would be living with before commiting, obviously as we have to live with that person, and that person has to live with us!

Pretty safe reply, very vague on the location, didn’t give my full name away and Ive planted the bits about referencing and meeting the person first. The e-mail I got back pretty much confirmed my suspicions……

Needless to say, I never did reply. Lots of bullsh*t trying to provoke me
to send him my full name and address………….

Good job Roger on picking out an obvious scam and also for using a generic e-mail address.

The two things that jump right out at me is that Mr. Steven Randy even mentioned he would be making an overpayment and asking Roger to wired the excess. That’s exactly like the tutor scam among other fake check scams. Secondly I like how he asks Roger for his State and ZIP Code. ZIP codes are exclusive to the U.S. No to mention the bad English and to an Englishman that’s really bad English.

I received the following e-mail from reader Ervin about his job serach on craigslist…

I have posted my resume on Craigslist and you wouldn’t believe all the scam job offer’s that are emailed to me daily. I finally did get a local legitimate job in my field (I started today and was called by the Director of Manufacturing to interview last week). I am glad that I was able to get this job. But, these scammer’s have sunk to new lows by using the Coca-Cola name to scam people now. Were you aware of this new scam? I am going to

They also included a website that identified Coke as being at a thecoca-colacompany URL. Coke’s actual URL is coca-cola.com. And I’m pretty sure that a major corporation like Coke wouldn’t send out an e-mail that said “we are please to inform you.” I don’t think Coke would use Hotmail addresses either. This is just the phony check scam in a fake red and white package.

This one is right out of the Nigerian handbook. Warsaw, Nigeria, Christian missionary, all the usual red flags.

I wonder if scam rental ads out number the real ones yet on craigslist.

I received this e-mail today from Gene who is a realtor if you couldn’t tell by the title…

In my opinion, anything free will inevitably be misused as in the case of underage prostitution, scams and all that I read about here.

I therefore question a few less headline evoking issues. Why has it been that “for profit” enterprises selling various goods and services, including those of an erotic nature, are allowed to post for free
on CL (even the illegal ones) yet realtors must pay to post a rental listing? Are we considered as being vendors of our services in the procurement of leases for the owners we represent? Surely, all the vendors who advertise for free on CL are representing their services (including erotic and illegal) or products made by themselves or another manufacturer are doing this for profit. Why are realtors services for representing their product discriminated against by having to pay a fee per posting.

Is there some “weak link” in the real estate business on CL that needed to be strengthened to prevent some illegal activity ?

I have asked the management of CL this question and have never gotten an answer of any kind.

Unfortunately Gene I do not have an answer for you. I can’t even begin to fathom the thought processes at craigslist.

Also from what I understand you’re better off not posting on craigslist since the odds are pretty good your ad could be hijacked by a scammer.

I received the following e-mail from reader Diana about an employment scam…

I have been looking for work on Craig’s List. Very successful and that is why I keep looking. Back in April when I found myself unemployed, I spend many hours sending out my resume to posted jobs. It all started with one posting where they were going to pay $25 and hour for a job that I have been doing and getting paid $15. What a deal I thought! I replied, sent my resume to receive a reply that the job had been filled, however, here is another opportunity for me. I had to qualify and fill in the questions below. I happily did and got a reply back that I was accepted and this is my assignment. They would send me a check for couple thousand dollars, you take your 10% commission and send the rest back by Western Union. Once I received the money order/cashiers check/business check, I called the bank listed on it to find out it was a fraud account. If I could cash all the bogus checks I have received while doing this money scam for fun, I could retire. It is a shame that so many people take ads like this and think they are real, but then in the end, they are out thousands of dollars for a moment of greed. Yes, they have figured out how to pull a scam even through the job search sections. Such a shame. Job hunter beware.

Which leads me to believe that paid ads are not the be all and end all to security that craigslist thinks they are.

I received this scam e-mail from reader Mike. The ad was on the Nashville craigslist. This one seems like they’re not even trying anymore…

I’m amazed that the people who fall for these scams can actually operate a computer.

Some more fake craigslist scammer names to add to the list. The first one is Arsenio Calle which was used on the typical renter scam, thanks to reader Keith.

We also have Peter Terry and Liana Costello with the email address of lai.costello@yahoo.com which were used on rental scams in the Felton, California area. Thanks to reader Denica for those.

Rachel from Alaska is back with another e-mail response she got while looking on craigslist for a new place to live.

It gets better… the only other one that I responded to besides this, I got this response from “josh korinto” at jkorinto@yahoo.com… I actually drove by the rental and found that it was posted by a rental agency and it was not a house. Just thought I would send you another one.

— It seemed odd since they were out of country so I did some searching and found this site. I responded to the email and inquired as to why it was no longer listed on craigslist because I wanted to take a look at the pictures again and this was the response:

“I took the posting off craigslist after you contacted me…Dont you want to rent it any longer?”

I haven’t responded since I have done further research, but as you can see, they are really trying the bait. Please beware!

Wait a sec, She’s in Warsaw and Nigeria at the same time? That’s a neat trick. I will say that their English is getting better though. It’s still a scam people. Rachel was smart enough to do some research. Unfortunately not all people are. If they were these 419 scammers would be put out of business.

I got the following e-mail from a legitimate massage therapist. You know the ones. The ones with licenses that don’t give happy endings that usually work in an actual spa and not just some place that calls itself a spa when it’s in a rundown hole in the wall in the seedy part of town. Anyway this massage therapist has a beef with craigslist…

What bugs me about all the articles about craigslist is that they don’t encourage the public to flag illegal ads! As a massage therapist, hookers on craigslist give my profession a bad name. Please start encouraging people to flag these illegal ads, if we all work together we can reduce these ads! Hell, at least it’s better than doing nothing!

Oh believe me MT, I do recommend that. However for every action there’s an equal an opposite reaction. If anyone ever comes out and publicly claims they flag ads the hookers and whoremongers start a harassment campaign.

But as long as everyone stays quiet about it I think we could theoretically get something accomplished.

If everyone reading this went to their local craigslist and started flagging just a few illegal ads in the erotic servuces section maybe we could actually get craigslist’s attention on this.

I received the following rental scam email from Shannon. It has a most unusal scammer name.

I am so glad i found your site. I contacted a supposed landlord about a great apartment he posted on craigslist. The property is in Evanston, IL. Here is the email he sent back. Total Scam!!!!!
