Win a free craigscrimelist t-shirt

It’s been way too long since we last gave away a free CCL t-shirt but we get to give one away today It goes to Pamela for the following comment

I do not use Craigslist because of all the terrible things that have happened from using it, as for the backpage they need to remove it. It is so sad when these girls are in this kind of situation and everyone who uses this page is just as guilty as the ones hurting these girls! It could be your wife or daughter. Thank you for everything you do to inform use of CL crime.

Thank you Pamela for being such a great reader. I’ll be contacting you to have the shirt sent out to you.

Speaking of the shirts there is going to be a slight delay in having them sent out in the next couple of weeks due to personal reasons but the contests continue.

Today is your chance to win a free craigscrimelist t-shirt emblazoned with the motto “Friends don’t let friends use craigslist.”

As before the rules are simple. Please comment on this post why you are boycotting craigslist or backpage or why you don’t use craigslist or backpage in the first place or why you think it’s a bad idea to use craigslist or backpage.

Please use the e-mail address you would like to be contacted at in the e-mail address field.

If you have entered before and have not won you can enter on this and future posts as well.

This contest will end 8pm Eastern Time 6/13/2011 or later if comments are light, but there will be more chances to win shirts in the coming weeks.

Take a stand. Do the right thing. And you might win a shirt in the process.

It also wouldn’t hurt if you could please Tweet this post or post it on Facebook

Village Voice Media Getting Down and Dirty with Escort Ads:

This is an excellent article written by Kat Stoeffel of the New York Observer, which is an alt-weekly newspaper in New York City much like the infamous Village Voice.

In this article Ms. Stoeffel takes Village Voice Media to task in the objectivity department when it comes to stories related to craigslist. As I’m sure most of you know Village Voice Media owns the craigslist competitor backpage.com. Since craigslist shut down it’s adult/erotic services section backpage has become the leader in prostitution ads on the internet.

Ms. Stoeffel also details a history of VVM’s other shady business practices. It seems that the so called champion of the people is more concerned with the bottom line.

She even interviewed an advocate who is knowledgeable about crimes being perpetrated on backpage…

The pseudonymous crime blogger Trench Reynolds aggregates news stories about crimes involving Backpage, in part because the stories often fail to get much attention beyond local papers. (And so far they have not been reported by VVM properties.) In April alone, he’s found three stories involving underage persons sold or solicited through the site.

“Backpage says they review, but they haven’t to my knowledge,” Mr. Reynolds told The Observer. “Whatever steps they say they’re taking, it doesn’t seem to me like they’re doing anything at all.”

I urge you to read the entire article. It’s nice to see that true journalism hasn’t died yet.

The fight isn’t over yet. Help spread the word on craigslist and backpage crime by winning a free CraigsCrimeList T-Shirt.

Why Hasn’t Another Product Disrupted and Replaced Craigslist?:

This is an article that’s been making the rounds in tech circles. It was a question that was originally posted on Quora that was answered by venture capitalist Josh Hannah. In a nutshell Mr. Hannah says that craigslist is being disrupted and replaced by being nickel and dimed by other specialized websites like StubHub and Etsy. Mr. Hannah goes on to say that craigslist is being replaced but they just don’t know it yet.

I don’t believe craigslist has been replaced yet and I’ll tell you why I think that is. It comes down to two things, brand name and ignorance.

In internet terms craigslist has been around since the dawn of time. They have established themselves as a brand name in the world of free classifieds. Convenience and familiarity cause people not to do any research on finding an alternative. When they need to buy or sell something the’ll just say “Eh, use craigslist.” Not to mention the cult like fans that craigslist has attracted over the years that are Apple-like in their devotion to the site.

And even if craigslist had been replaced they would either not know it or deny it. That seems to be craigslist M.O.

If you want to use a safer classifieds site I recommend Geebo.com.

Win a free craigscrimelist t-shirt

For the 3rd week in a row I didn’t have to extend the contest for a lack of comments. It seems business is actually picking up now.

This week’s winning comments comes to us from Cheryl

I don’t trust Craigslist because there is no oversight – so many people have been killed or hurt or ripped off responding to CL postings. When you call the newspaper to place an ad, they ask questions before accepting your ad, which makes me feel like it’s a much safer way to conduct business. Of course, CL is free – but you get what you pay for – and there appears to be no one looking out for the integrity of the site. Thanks for all you do to inform the public of Craigslist crime.

Thank you Cheryl for being an active participant in the discussion. I’ll be contacting you to have the shirt sent out to you.

Speaking of the shirts there is going to be a slight delay in having them sent out in the next couple of weeks due to personal reasons but the contests continue.

Reader Jeremy sent me a great link to poignant yet hilarious blog called “Why was I flagged on Craigslist?”.

It contains a highly unofficial FAQ on why your craigslist ad was probably flagged. Here’s a sample…

Q: Why shouldn’t I ask for help in the Craigslist flag help forum?

A: Friend, the Craigslist flag help forum is a particular kind of hell realm designed to torture your body and soul into eternal penance for having posting something on Craigslist which was subsequently and inevitably flagged. You may, after fasting and prayer, thoughtful contemplation, physical preparation and having settled all earthly accounts, choose to click over to the forum solely for educational and completely non-interactive purposes. If you choose to do so, and God help you friend if you make that grave and serious choice, you will find the slaughter of the innocents of confused and once hopeful Craigslist flagged in their full, bloody, humiliated misery. And there, like the minions from the lake of hell fire that they are, are the truly horrible Craigslist volunteer moderators plucking at livers, poking their pitchforks, stoking fires, laughing diabolically, and unceasingly tormenting all who commit the sin of asking for help in the Craigslist flag help forum.

It’s funny because it’s true.

Win a free craigscrimelist t-shirt

It seems that business is picking up again as we had another winning comment for two weeks in a row now for the free craigscrimelist t-shirt.

This week’s comment comes to us from Tiffany

CL is disgusting. How can people know if they are looking at something genuine? I mean, some people are selling sex on there. DISGUSTING. Geebo is the real deal. I feel so much safer using it and I know I am not being duped.

Now remember kids, you don’t have to mention Trench’s favorite classifieds site in Geebo.com but it doesn’t hurt.

But now on to this week’s contest which is the same as it has been.

Today is your chance to win a free craigscrimelist t-shirt emblazoned with the motto “Friends don’t let friends use craigslist.”

Greg Collier, the CEO of Geebo.com throws down the gauntlet once again not only to craigslist but to all online classifieds site in order to protect users of such sites.

In an open letter to the industry Mr. Collier calls on the industry to instill more safeguards on their websites.

Here are some of the safeguards Mr. Collier is calling for…

Provide both automated and manual screening of all ads before they go live. Content on Geebo.com, for example, is screened through a proprietary filter that utilizes keyword lists developed by the Center for Missing and Exploited Children and various law enforcement agencies.

Take a proactive approach to remove, reduce and prevent crime on the sites by reporting all suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.

Refuse all erotic and “adult” ads and instead provide support for positive family and community interactions. Geebo, for example, offers free postings to non-profit organizations and includes volunteer listings from VolunteerMatch.org.

You would think that these safeguards would be common sense for all online classifieds sites but some seem to think that profit is more important than the safety of its users not realizing that if your users aren’t safe you may not have any more users soon.

A copy of the letter from Mr. Collier can be seen below.

WeGoLook

We have a new advertiser here at CraigsCrimeList called WeGoLook.com.

They provide what I think is an ingenious service for those wanting to do business through any online classifieds site. If you want to inspect an item before purchasing WeGoLook will send out one of their lookers to inspect the item for you. They have 7000 lookers who have passed background checks that will go out and look at the item. Not only do they provide item and property verification but they’ll even check out your possible online date for you.

Now I can hear you say “but Trench, aren’t you giving them a good review because they’re an advertiser?” and you would have a very valid point. However I still have these things called scruples and I would not allow an advertiser on this site if I didn’t believe in the product.

So if you need an item, property or person to be verified please use WeGoLook.com by clicking on the banner above or the one on the sidebar.

Win a free craigscrimelist t-shirt

It only took us a day this time to get a winning comment. It was the only comment we got but it’s a great comment. This week’s winning comment is from Morse_the_horse

I was a volunteer for a number of years helping people with questions and problems on craigslist. I finally just gave up. CL had no apparent interest in getting rid of the real spammers and scammers but let “community moderation” get rid of the small troublemaking advertiser. They also did nothing about those harassing the helpers.

CL is a profit-making company but I volunteered because I liked their concept of local advertising. Also as someone who bought and sold a few items at no cost, I felt I owed something back for that opportunity. However, not getting rid of the real spammers and the obvious non-locals and not fixing their rules and FAQs to make it clear to the small poster what was acceptable or not and not even communicating to the helpers what was their official interpretations of their rules just got to be too much.

They seem to be smoking too many of those “funny little cigarettes” for “medical” purposes to really care. I gave up and don’t help nor use it any more.

So there it is from someone who volunteered their own time and effort in order to help craigslist but it seems that craigslist didn’t really want the help.

But now on to this week’s contest which is the same as it has been.

Today is your chance to win a free craigscrimelist t-shirt emblazoned with the motto “Friends don’t let friends use craigslist.”

I’ve reviewed identity authentication services in the past and while they’re good most of them work exactly the same. Tru.ly on the other hand offers some extras that make them stand out from the crowd.

In case you’re new here and you wonder what the ID auth siytes are all about is that basically if you’re doing business online on classifieds sites or other sites as a seller you can use these services to prove to buyers that you’re an actual person and not some criminal.

When I review these kind of sites my first step is to always see if I can fake out their verification process and I could not fake out Tru.ly so they succeed there.

Now the big difference between Tru.ly and other services is that you have the option of adding your social networking profiles to your tru.ly account in order to verify those as belonging to you as well.

Also if you’re doing business with someone online or meeting them for the first time or whatever you can ask them to go through the tru.ly process to verify themselves.

Tru.ly also offers a browser pluigin for both Chrome and Firefox that will tell you if a social networking profile has been verified through them.

Tru.ly is currently in beta and currently a free service. You can get a persnoalized tru.ly URL for $4.95.

I really can not find a fault in Tru.ly so it gets the much vaunted Trench Reynolds Seal of Approval (bark bark).

(In the interest of transparency this was a non sponsored review.)
