You don’t care

I’ll be honest with you. I started this site for money.

when I first started this site I was getting paid by b5media to do MyCrimeSpace. It turned out to be somewhat lucrative. It was a nice piece of coin that I got from b5 to do something I liked to do while also doing something I believed in. I thought I could get lightning to strike twice. So I started craigscrimelist. While doing MCS I also included craigslist stories because craigslist was technically the very first social network. However like most things that start out small with noble beginnings become large and corrupt with their success. It did not escape my notice that craigslist had become that corrupt. I thought it was a great idea for a blog and I believed in its core message that craigslist had become corrupt and that corruption needed to be brought to light. And if I could make a little money doing it so be it. My primary responsibility is to keep my family housed and fed.

However b5 was having none of it. They decided that they no longer wanted to have blogger owned blogs in their network. I understand that is the way of business and economics so I harbored no ill will towards b5. I did miss the money though but such is life. If you obsess over things like that it will drive you mad. I didn’t stop blogging here at CCL though. There were stories that needed to be told that needed to be brought to a much wider audience. I realized I was tilting at windmills but sometimes a lone voice in the darkness is all that is needed to bring about change. Or so I thought.

While I was attending the screening of Call + Response with Greg from Geebo he said something to me that stuck with me. He said something to the effect of you would think people would have not forgotten about craigslist after New York and Boston murders. Of course he was referring to the murders of Julissa Brisman and George Weber both of which were facilitated through craigslist.

That got me thinking. I went through the names of the lives who had been claimed before. I thought things would change after the murders of Katherine Ann Olson and Heather Snively. I thought things would change after the orchestrated rapes in Wyoming and just a few towns over from me in North Carolina. I thought things would change after I personally went on national and local TV to discuss about all the horrible things that take place on craigslist. I thought things would change after the reports came out that craigslist was hording the money they take for the sex ads that are nothing more than false fronts for human trafficking and child prostitution. You know what has changed?

Nothing.

Nothing has changed. After all the scandals and lies that have been put forth by craigslist nothing has changed. Recently CNN had an expose about the sex trafficking on craigslist and it will change nothing. I don’t even want to go into the lies and inaccuracies put forth by craigslist’s mouthpiece because it will change nothing.

Do you know why nothing changes? It’s because you don’t care. Maybe not you because you’re reading this and not me because I am writing this but for the most part no one cares. They don’t care that people are losing their lives in the name of a bargain or a job. People say that these victims deserved it because they weren’t smart enough. People don’t care that women and children are being trafficked all over the supposed land of the free as long as they can get a cheap sofa or a deal on an apartment. Hell, I can barely get people to type a few words on this website to get a free t-shirt because they just don’t care. But you know what? That’s ok.

I forgive you.

That’s right. I said I forgive you. I feed off of your apathy. I relish your disdain and callousness. It means I just have work even harder to get the message out. I will not rest until craigslist removes not only its ‘adult services’ section but its casual encounters section as well. And it’s not just craigslist either. It’s also sites like the Village Voice Media owned backpage.com or any other site that may pop in their places that is the stalking grounds of killers, rapists, pimps and thieves.

For those of you that do care I need you to step things up. Tell people about this site or any site that dares to call craigslist out on its abominable record on human trafficking and child prostitution. You don’t even need to tell them about this site. Just tell them what is being perpetrated on craigslist and its twisted progeny like backpage. Be proud to enlighten people of the error of craigslist’s ways. Change does not always come from within, sometimes in needs to come from without. Knowledge is power.

Now who wants a damn t-shirt?

I think I should get 2 shirts. Because you know that sporting the shirt on top of my glorious rack will surely get the word out. Consider this – It will gain much attention when I wear paired with only a bikini and flip flops. That's right. I happen to know that the beach cities residence are big on cragslist advertising. I have had endless converations with co-workers and neighbors. I have pushed them to use the Recycler in lieu of craigslist. Snively was just the beginning for me. I'm with you on this one.

But only in your shadow….. I know my place.

  • WriterOnFire

I'm gonna steal April's idea (heehee) but with a twist.

I'm gonna THREATEN to wear my shirt with just a bikini & high heels if my neighbors won't boycott Craiglist.

    I expect positive results ;P

Haaaaahaaaaaa!  Shame on you!  I almost choked on this crap I call breakfast.  You know us California freaks…. I think you'd call this a smoothie.  Ick.  Biscuits and gravy would be amazing right now.

I'll be honest here, I never really thought about craigslist being a cesspool until I started reading your blog (I never sold anything on there, but I bought my son's paintball guns and shit plus a few other things). Then, because I need to know way to much about certain things, I started doing a little more reading about crimes committed through craigslist and I was shocked. Hookers, drug deals, murder, rape, child molestation, human trafficing, robbery, assault, I could go on for days. I sat my son down, and informed him that craigslist was 100% off limits (he would look for what he wanted and I would contact the sellers). I showed him some of the really bad articles, and it scared him enough to not try and test me AT ALL. I have not even thought about buying anything from that site again, and I tell everyone I know to stay far, far away from craigslist.

But I only comment here for the free t-shirt. ;)

  • WriterOnFire

Secretly, you wanna be my neighbor & you know it ;P

Yk, I'm not far from Cali.
    Road trip, anyone??

After I get my shirt, of course ;)

  • http://www.myspace.com/aprilamber April

Hawt Dayum!  Where do you live?  I'm in for the road trip – with or without the shirt.  I'll bring the scotch.

  • Kathy

Trench, you are so right, in fact there are many national crisis' occuring every day, and no one cares. I tried to tell my hubby the other nite about the ugly side of Craiglist, he says he didn't know, and didn't believe Craiglist caused so much grief. He didn't know because he didn't want to know.
I have learned this thru my many years on earth, people believe what the WANT to believe. That eliminates taking any responsibility for the problem at hand. SOOO easy to keep one's head in the sand. Apathy in America.

  • Kathy1155

Oh, can I go too? I'll bring the soda (for the scotch) and my best backrubbing techniques! Oh PLease! I gotta get outta this town…..

  • http://www.myspace.com/aprilamber April

Holy shit!  Are you hawt?  I need a backrub – and a hawt chick would make it just a little better.

(oh) – I like my scotch on the rocks.  Not often…. But once in a while.

  • WriterOnFire

    Change of plans guys —

We're going to take our party to the craigslist headquarters front lawn. With our shirts.

    ;D

  • http://www.myspace.com/aprilamber April

Bingo!  Does that mean I have to wear panties?

Hey!  Do you read Trench's other site?  Bad Breeeders?

  • Kathy1155

I can bring those little special blue pills….~Sharing is Caring~

  • Kathy1155

April, I live on the must-see road tour map. It just wouldn't be the same without a trip to Lake Tahoe, now would it? See, another GOOD reason for me to go……

  • Kathy1155

I thought you were going to say, “Without our shirts…” like wearing the shirt tied around our waist, showing the logo, of course! ;-)

  • WriterOnFire

April, I gotta reply here :)

I'm pretty panties are optional at craigslist hq, to keep in line with their other business practices.

Yes, you caught me, I maintain a presence on Bad Breeders also. Been busy lately but I've followed Trench for years :)

Why April?? You need some troll bustin ??

  • http://www.myspace.com/aprilamber April

Are those like my little pink pills?  If so, please bring them.

  • http://www.myspace.com/aprilamber April

No Troll bustin'.  I just like to know who the regulars are.

BTW – I'm a “panties are optional” kinda girl.  I like the way you think.

  • Kathy1155

Yes, I read all of his sites….I'm devout
If your little pink pills are really relaxing, then yes they are like that ALOT. ;-)
I read your site too, Writer!!!!

  • Kathy1155

Boycott Craiglist! Spread the word…they are Pimps! and aid and abett murderers, rapists, kidnappers, abusers, you name it, if thet can get the dough, the Craiglist owner (forgot his name) is an International Pimp.

IDEA OF THE BOYCOTT GOES TO WRITER ON FIRE AND APRIL!!!!!

  • PG

Hi, I’m totally with you on closing down “adult services” — I didn’t realize how bad things were. But why “casual encounters”? It seems icky and predatory people (along with perfectly nice people with a penchant for casual sex) will just change to posting in the dating section of CL –or other internet sites– bugging people who are looking for meaningful dating. And why should anyone (besides stick-up-their-collective-asses conservatives) have a problem with people looking for casual consensual hook-ups on the internet? Please direct me to a post if you’ve already addressed what’s wrong with the “casual encounters” part of CL. (Even coded references for pay-to-play sex would be –I assume are– flagged in the casual encounters section by readers. And yes, better automated scanning could help this, too.)

  • Anonymous

PG, to me keeping up with ‘casual dating’ and ‘meaningful dating’ is that if it were to be up to CL, they are already presenting it is such in many of their advertisements, but that isn’t what ends of happening. They don’t do background searches, etc. like other legitimate dating services. It’s a “free for all” on CL, the lines are obviously VERY blurred with them, and they don’t care. DON’T CARE, meaning that is CL’s bottom line. They just want the $$$$.

  • http://thetrenchcoat.com Trench Reynolds

Casual encounters is where at least two rapes by proxy have been concocted. It’s also the same section where the pedophiles on craigslist troll for victims. Not to mention the number of robberies and assaults that have happened to gay men who have used the casual encounters section for cruising.

    Trench!!!
    This just in…
Philip Markoff dies from apparent suicide.

Thought it appropriate for this site!

Heather Snively was my step daughter and was a wonderful person who trusted everyone. She was so sweet and would have been the perfect mother. She was always showing me her sonogram pictures. She was so proud and excited to be a mom and was to be married to the love of her life, Chris. But suddenly Craigslist changed our whole family’s lives forever.
Let me tell you….I CARE. I have boycotted Craigslist and the whole family has as well. I will not hesitate to tell people they should be boycotting it also. It’s not worth your life for something free.

Sure, it was the evil people on Craigslist that led to Heather’s murder, it wasn’t exactly the Craiglist company or whatever they call themselves…..but there’s no way in this world I can ever step “foot” in that website ever again. Not because it brings up bad memories, but because I think it’s just a TOOL for criminals.
I had no idea Craigslist had all those other things available…hookers and whatnot. But now I know, and thank you so much for getting the word out. You may have prevented many murders because of your blog. I admire your drive to keep fighting that disgusting place. Please keep it up. I sure will.

    Thanks, K

Thank you Kristies and my condolences about your stepdaughter.

A single voice in the dark, is a great example and your cause is most certainly worthy. Causes are not like casual sex, there are few one night stands. You embrace an idea and you hold it until you no longer breath life. Along the way the best of society will join you, but usually their time is shorter than yours.

My issue was Warren Jeffs and the child brides of polygamy. In the year 2000 I entered, met with the FBI, attended court hearings and jumped in to a completely thankless job. In 2001 I was running an underground railroad out. Flora Jessop took over this function in 2002. By 2004 we were depressed. when Warren made the FBI’s MOST WANTED list we were stoked in 2005. In 2006 he was arrested, tried in 2007. In case over turned in Utah, charges dropped in Arizona, but currently being extradited to Texas. Its lots of ups, but more downs, but its a fueled passion.

We discovered a link to sex slaving out of Mexico as a hub for Eastern Europe and Craig’s List is now linked to that activity. Amber Lyon’s investigative piece was impressive, she was doing what we expect a good journalist to do and yet the CEO said she ambushed them. Morons!

In child brides we had a loose network of 60-80 activist operating separetly, but sharing research. The FLDS lawyers had no central leadership to attack and likely such attacks would of backfired.

I evolved to a government and media source and have seen progress over the past 10 years. I will see more progress in the next 10 years to come. So my advise you should continue to be that voice in the dark.

Craig’s List a cesspool? I have sold on ebay for 12 years, my feedback is 100% at 17,000 I was a fairly serious seller. Craig’s List was FREE, so I tried it! Legit stuff rarely sales, it happens with furniture though, I seen that sell. We have rentals and the cons are endless, bogus money orders where you return a portion for a variety of excuses. When I listed more than a dozen items at one time, I averaged 20-25 spamming emails a day. Most were harmless, but serious con artist are very active there. There are lots of warnings, but when it comes to the sex trade, when a John gets ripped off, who does he tell? If you sell sex and get ripped off, who do the women complain too? Unless you go under cover, little gets known or exposed.
