Story points to potential social networking dangers:

I originally posted about Robert Harris and Richard Johnson here. They were half of a four man crew that were running a prostitution ring on craigslist  in Millersville, Maryland in order to buy ecstasy and gold teeth. Which I think in this context are pronounced ‘teef’.

That crew was also prostituting out underage girls from Ohio.

Harris and Johnson have both pleaded guilty.

According to authorities Harris also tried to tamper with witnesses from behind bars.

The other half of the crew, Craig Allen Corey and Jacob Tyler, are still awaiting trial.

Harris and Johnson are still facing life behind bars.

However the fact that they got around craigslist’s supposed screening but they used MySpace and YouTube as well. But for that part of the story you’ll have to go here.

Mom who advertised sex on web sentenced:

I originally posted about Aaron Hundersmarck here. He was the former Idaho prison guard who was sentenced to 1-15 years for fondling the 16-year-old daughter of his craigslist ‘masseuse’.

Now that masseuse has also been sentenced. Rachele Bromley (pictured, yeesh) has been sentenced to 2-10 years for aiding and abetting sexual battery of a minor and inducing a minor under the age of 18 into prostitution. So it seems that she was trying to get her daughter into the family business.

Rape suspects remain in jail:

In a case that bears a striking resemblance to the one that happened near me in Kannapolis, NC two men have been arrested for the rape of woman that was set up through craigslist.

27-year-old Jebidiah James Stipe of Twentynine Palms, California has been arrested for allegedly setting up the rape of a woman in Natrona County, Wyoming through craigslist. 26-year-old Ty Oliver McDowell of Casper has been arrested for the rape itself. The rape is said to have taken place on December 11th.

What is unclear at this time is Stipe’s relationship to the victim and what the ad that solicited the rape said.

Of course the EFF is quick to defend craigslist…

Matt Zimmerman, senior staff attorney at Electronic Frontier Foundation in California, said Craigslist is protected from liability for posting ads requesting illegal activity under the 1996 Federal Communications Act.

“The law is pretty clearly on the side of Craigslist and (other similar sites),” Zimmerman said.

“To give Craigslist a little credit, they negotiated an agreement with attorneys general across the country where they basically said, ‘We’re not obligated to do this, but we’ll do a number of things to alleviate your concerns,’” he said.

“That’s above and beyond what they’re required to do by law,” Zimmerman said.

You would think that being such an allegedly socially conscious organization that craigslist would do more than just the bare minimum of what the law requires.

Much like the ACLU the EFF is choosing the wrong battles and giving itself a credibility problem.

Considering that McDowell is also accused of violating the victim with a foreign object I don’t see how the EFF and craigslist can say that they’re doing enough.

Tea woman accused in sex traffic ring released to father:

I originally posted about Megan Hayes here. Along with her boyfriend, Brandon Quincy Thompson, the pair from Tea, South Dakota have been federally charged with pimping out underage girls on  the Village Voice Media owned classified site Backpage. The pair are looking at life sentences for their alleged acts.

So it kind of puzzles me why Hayes was released into the custody of her father in Davenport, Iowa.

Hayes has no prior criminal history, and her father, brother and a neighbor from Tea testified that Hayes was a shy, reliable person who prefers staying home with pets to leaving the house.

I’m sorry but shy and reliable people don’t participate in child prostitution rings. I wouldn’t be surprised if she bolted while out on release.

Feds seek 4th suspect in sex trafficking, prostitution ring:

The FBI, the IRS and the Anchorage, Alaska police department have busted a major prostitution and trafficking ring that has operated on craigslist since 2006.

Authorities have arrested Sabil Mumin Mujahid, Sidney Lamar Greene, and Rand Hooks while Keyana “Koko” Marshall (pictured) remains at large.

The quartet are accused of prostituting at least 50 women with at least 3 underage girls. They are also accused of identity theft and tax fraud because they would get the personal information of their victims and use it to file tax returns and collect the money. Sounds like a lot of victims in a victimless crime.

Not to mention the fact that this went on craigslist for 3 years with it never being flagged. Go figure.

9 indicted on child sex trafficking charges in SD:

Nine people were indicted on federal charges of child sex trafficking in San Diego this past week. The nine are believed to have been part of a San Diego gang that prostituted three girls ages 15, 16 and 19 on craigslist. The alleged crimes took place between January and November of 2009.

Now when did craigslist supposedly change their site to prevent things like this from happening? That’s right, it was May of 2009. It’s working liking a charm. Oh wait, no it’s not.

And again where was the so called user policing to flag these ads? Then again you can’t believe that sucm who use child prostitutes would make the best policemen.

Graphic post on CraigsList lands Cedarburg native in jail:

Man arrested at Cedarburg McDonald’s on computer sex sting:

Man Busted in Sex Sting:

39-year-old Micah Stern (pictured) is from New York City. He was in Cedarburg, Wisconsin for a funeral. He must have been so grief stricken in his mourning that he allegedly posted a graphic ad on craigslist.

The ad was entitled ‘Coach Seeking Boys’ and went on to read “I am into younger guys who like aggressive men”

The ad also contained a cartoon, which I bet was some form of anime, of a man and boy having sex.

A 14-year-old boy responded to an ad and Stern allegedly set up a meeting in the men’s room of a McDonalds in Cedarburg. Luckily the 14-year-old boy was actually an undercover state agent.

Now Stern’s alleged ad wasn’t placed in the adult services section or even the casual encounters section. It was posted in the Men seeking Men section. Where was the self policing on this one that craigslist and the EFF are so fond to flout about? Most gay men that I know are as equally as repulsed by child molestation as I am. Why wasn’t this ad flagged especially in such a small town setting?

How many ads like this go unflagged with children being molested?

Sex trafficking case heats up online-ads flap:

This article is a follow up about Brandon Quincy Thompson, 26, and his girlfriend Megan Marie Hayes, 30, of Tea, South Dakota who have been charged in federal court for sex trafficking on backpage. They pleaded not guilty in court this past week but that’s not what I want to talk about.

The article details the ‘changes’ that craigslist has gone through and also details one Philip Markoff who the media dubbed the craigslist killer. However I want to share a few quotes with you.

Backpage.com, a site based in Scottsdale, Ariz., and owned by Village Voice media, has yet to implement such changes. The site has 1.7 to 2.2 million unique page views each month. Representatives of the company did not return calls for comment.

Free-speech advocates argue for self-policing, saying too many ads are posted to expect forum owners to monitor each one.

“The notion is that the soapbox shouldn’t be held responsible for what the person on the soapbox says,” said Matt Zimmerman, a lawyer with the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Just because the law protects them doesn’t make it right. No matter what anybody says no one can tell me that craigslist and backpage aren’t at least partially responsible for the child prostitution and human trafficking that takes place on their sites. After all they do provide sections on their sites dedicated to it. They’re not called the human trafficking sections but they might as well be.

And all it would btake is to remove some code from their websites.

Teen Arrest for Craigslist Drug Ad:

A 13-year-old boy from Sacramento, California was arrested for allegedly selling Oxycodone among other items on craigslist. The local Fox station there came across the ad and in turn they notified police who were surprised as anyone to find a 13-year-old pushing Oxycodone. Not only was the teen arrested but police also arrested the people who were trying to buy the drugs from him.

I didn’t think there was an illegal prescription drug section of craigslist. Yet again I have to ask where was craigslist’s user policing on this one. That’s right, they were running to the kid to buy pills.

Letting the inmates run the asylum never works.

Men charged in hotel robbery:

Roommates from Austin, Texas, Christopher Monk, 36, and Jaime Javier Jimenez, 17, so there’s a creep factor right there, have been charged with trying to assault a craigslist hooker. The pair arranged to meet the woman at her hotel room. When they got there Jimenez allegedly pulled a knife on the woman and let in Monk who came in with a video camera. Jimenez was trying to knock out the woman with a sock soaked in chemicals. It seems that one of them found a website that tells you how to make homemade chloroform.

What Monk and Jimenez probaly didn’t know is that a lot of escorts have drivers/bodyguards. So did the victim. When he came out of the bathroom Jimenez and Monk took off.

First off why is a 36-year-old man living with a 17-year-old boy? Reminds me of the DC Sniper and Lee Boyd Malvo. Secondly why were they videotaping it? Were these two trying to become serial killers but were obviously too inept to pull it off?

This one is for the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot files.
