UI students targeted in two separate online scams:
Two University of Illinois students were approached by craigslist scammers.
One was a male student who posted his services for baby sitting on craigslist. He was sent a check for $5150 and was told to cash it and send the rest to someone else. He realized it was a scam and reported it to campus police.
A female student who was advertising for a roommate received a $3850 check from someone going by the name of Amy Christopherson from Spain and was instructed to do the same. She did deposit the check and sent the rest of the money to a third party. Of course the check was fake.
Never ever ever ever deposit a check that is more than you asked. Odds are it’s a scam.
