SEC on the trail of craigslist scamsters:
The Securities and Exchange Commission are after identity thieves who stole identities in order to open fraudulent brokerage accounts. They stole the identities by posting a fictitious job ad on craigslist for the fake Latvian brokerage firm of AWE Trading Inc.
The unknown traders then used this personal information to open securities trading accounts online at Interactive Brokers LLC without the individuals’ knowledge.
The SEC’s complaint further alleges that between March 8 and April 24, the unknown traders gained unauthorized online access to accounts held by customers of various retail brokerage firms.
Even the job ads on craigslist aren’t safe. I wonder how craigslist is assisting the SEC on this one since they claim to be such a friend of law enforcement.
