Reader e-mail tells of scam

I received this e-mail from reader Claudia about her brother being scammed…

Dear Trench, I came across your website because I read about a craig’s list scam. Well my family and I were victims of a scam in February. My brother listed his equipment for sale on craig’s list, and he was contacted by a guy wanting to buy it. The list price was $900.00. 2 days later we received three Canadian money orders each for $900.00. The guy contacted us via email, stating his secretary sent us two extra money orders that were meant for his daughter in College in Atlanta, GA. and she needed it to pay for her apartment and bills. He asked us to wire the money to her asap. My brother being young and honest deposited the money in his account, withdrew the money and wired it. The guy also said that FED EX would be picking up the package to have it ready. My brother went on to withdraw money he thought he had from the sale of his equipment.

The guy contacted us several times that day to ask if we had wired the money. My brother emailed him and confirmed that he had. The equipment was never picked up by FED EX which we thought was odd. 10 days later my dad received a call from the bank asking him to come down. When he arrived the director told him that the money orders were false and that the account my brother shared with him was now negative $2,700.00. I don’t really care about the money as much as the fact that these sick individuals made my mother cry, my dad had a near heart attack at the bank from the shock and I saw my brother cry for the second time in his life. This experience has left us untrusting of EVERYONE. We all feel violated. I hope these sickos get caught one day.

Thanks Claudia for sharing that with us.Hopefully your brother’s tale will help other people from being scammed.

Remember what I always say, if you absolutely feel you have to do business on craigslist local only and cash only.

It’s really hard to feel sorry for stupid people. I mean, I’m sorry you got scammed and all, but you should have just sent the money orders back to the person who sent them. You can’t get scammed without your permission.

I’d have to agree. Claudia’s brother was foolish. Everywhere you go on Craigslist you are warned not to do this sort of thing, shame on him.
