Column: Free to Love Craigslist:

Jo Mathis is a former reporter from Ann Arbor, Michigan. In this column for The Ann Arbor Chronicle she says that now that she no longer works for a newspaper she’s free to love craigslist because craigslist is seen as the enemy of the newspaper industry since it provides free classifieds. As a matter of fact she fawns so much over craigslist that Jim freakin’ Buckmaster himself blogged about the column.

I love the way Craigslist is open to everybody with computer access at no charge. I love how it meets people’s needs for jobs and rides and housing and drapes, and how it offers a glimmer of hope to the lovestruck woman wondering about the cute guy wearing a green shirt at Whole Foods.

That’s all well and good Ms. Mathis but I have to call your skills as a reporter into question. A good reporter would look into the dark side of craigslist.

Does this mean you love the fact that a dozen or so people have been killed while doing business on craigslist? What about the two women who were raped after men posted ads on craigslist that said they were into rape fantasies when they weren’t. And last but certainly not least what about the millions of women and children that are trafficked and prostituted on craigslist each and every day which craigslist refuses to do anything about?

Do you still love craigslist now?

I posted a comment on the article but it’s being held for moderation. Let’s see if it gets approved.

Again if you want to use a real socially conscious classifieds site I recommend Geebo.com. Geebo is human trafficking free, not evil and they don’t have blood on their hands.

Cops: Craigslist car scammer got greedy, got caught:

20-year-old Anthony Parkhurst was arrested in Orlando, Florida for allegedly selling a stolen car on craigslist, stealing it again and trying to sell it again on craigslist.

Supposedly he’s part of a larger statewide ring of car thieves.

And to show that their serious the City of Orlando put his bond at $4000 which he posted and he’s now free.

I wonder if that $4000 was from selling the stolen car.

Police: Man Dead after Answering Craigslist Ad for ATV:

A man from Shelby Township, Michigan is dead after responding to a craigslist ad for an ATV.

The man and a friend went to a house in Detroit after responding to an ad for an ATV. The ‘seller’ said he needed a ride to get the keys. While in transit the ‘seller’ shot both men killing one.

The suspect is still at large and the victim has not yet been named.

One of these days I’m going to tally the body count that craigslist has left in its wake and have sort of a memorial.

Don’t forget to tell your friends that craigslist is not only dangerous but they do nothing to protect their users. Let them know about this site to show them that craigslist isn’t the trustworthy hippy commune that everyone thinks it is.

And since this happened in Murder City don’t expect to see this in the national media.

Overland Park police warn of online car-selling scam:

Police in Overland Park, Kansas are warning their residents of type of used car scam that is taking place on craigslist.

How it works is that a person buys a car from a private seller saying they were just in an accident and have an insurance check to pay for the car. The check turns out to be a forgery so the victim is swindled out of their car. Then the scam artists sell the stolen car on craigslist.

I lost a car in a flood once. The check from the insurance company was made out to me and the bank that held the loan on my car. If a buyer approached me with that kind of check or a check in the seller’s name I would not take that deal.

Online rental scammers: The Real Deal:

Residents in the Syracuse, New York area are being warned of a real estate scam on craigslist that could steal your identity.

In this scam it starts off with a phony ad being placed on craigslist except the ad is copied from a legitimate realtor. When you contact the person who placed the ad they send you to a website that they say is intended to get your credit report when in reality it’s set up just to steal your information.

My friends at Geebo tell me that the technology exists to remove ads like this before they ever get posted. Take a look at their site: geebo.com.

3 robbed in Milton after responding to Craigslist ad:

3 men from Rhode Island were robbed at gunpoint after responding to a craigslist ad from Milton, Mass. for a TV. The address they were sent to was a vacant apartment. One of the victims went inside alone where he was held at gun point by two men. The suspects then went and got the other two victims out of the car. All the victims were robbed of their cash and belongings and one was even beaten. The two suspects are still at large.

Considering one of the victims went into the apartment by himself leads me to believe that he thought doing business on craigslist is a safe experience when obviously it isn’t. As I’ve said before craigslist is the online hive of scum and villainy and you’d be surprised how many people are unaware of this.

I had an e-mail conversation today with a reader who had a very harrowing experience while trying to rent an apartment from a landlord that advertised on craigslist.

Her first e-mail to me said that the landlord had been arrested and was advertising again on craigslist and was there somewhere that this could be reported? My Reply was that you can try to flag the ad but that won’t guarantee that anything will be done about it. Or you could post an ad of your own telling of your experience with this landlord but that could get your ad flagged and removed. So basically I told her that her only real recourse was to notify law enforcement as craigslist will more than likely do nothing about it.

Out of curiosity I asked why the landlord was arrested and she told me that in a nutshell the landlord provided no written agreement and constantly went back on their verbal agreement. When the tenant demanded her money back a scuffle ensued and the landlord ended up assaulting the tenant.

She now regrets using craigslist to rent and even went as far as to tell me that if you are going to rent anyplace to do a background check on your prospective landlord.

We don’t have to put up with this. Boycott Craigslist. Try Geebo.com for a socially responsible alternative to community classifieds.

Scam Alert: Cheap off-campus student housing:

Students enrolled at the University of Toledo, beware of craigslist ads promising cheap off campus housing. They are just the usual rental scam.

In this instance the scam artists said they were moving to Warsaw and asked perspective tenants to wire a deposit to Nigeria.

Remember kids overseas, cheap rent and wiring money are all three signs of a scam.

Knowledge is power.

Don’t forget your chance to win a free CCL t-shirt.
